We love fairy tales because they are predictable. The good people are good and the bad guys are known villains. There might be some surprises, but for the child reading them, they offer comfort. Happily ever after is attainable.
So Anne Christine Meiners writes and illustrates a fairy tale when she is fourteen. Why?
The year was 1943, she was living in Bavaria, sent with her classmates to be safe from war. Her tale includes sumptuous banquets and life “where the Prince doesn’t have to do anything because no one asks him to do anything.”
During this time, Christine’s life was a far cry from the fairy tale she wrote. We can enjoy it and read it to our children and grand-children. Some of us can appreciate the irony of this fairy tale written by a young German girl surrounded by privation and stilled voices. Let’s enjoy the imagination of a child who has evolved into a woman who stands and speaks for Peace in every way, each day.
