Saved from the Holocaust, and other sketches from life in four countries: a sort of memoir. Why this long title? “Saved from the Holocaust” is only one chapter, but the most crucial one. If the author and his immediate family had not escaped Nazi-occupied Prague just weeks before the outbreak of World War II, they would surely have perished in the Holocaust that followed. “Sketches” refers to the fact that this is not a conventional memoir that traces the author’s life chronologically. Rather, it is composed of some autobiographical chapters and some “stand-alone” reminiscences with elements of essay. Composed of seven parts, Heymann’s Saved from the Holocaust recounts the author’s life and experiences in four countries—Germany, Czechoslovakia, England (including wartime work in a factory), and America (including college, career and marriage); initiates us into the amateur sports car scene of the 1950s and ’60s; allows us to accompany him on some memorable travels; and, finally, lets us get to know the family members most important to him. The author lives in Brunswick, Maine.
